Why are we setting requirements?

Soy and palm oil are raw materials often associated with serious environmental and social risks, such as deforestation, loss of biodiversity, pollution, poor working conditions, and violations of Indigenous peoples’ land rights.

By setting requirements for sustainable production, we aim to contribute to positive development in the producing countries, ensuring that raw materials are sourced without negatively affecting people or the environment. The long-term goal is for soy and palm oil to be cultivated sustainably, without causing deforestation or land conversion, and with full respect for human rights.

What do you need to do as a supplier?

From December 31, 2025, your customers who are members of the Swedish platform on risk commodities will require that the soy and palm oil included in the products you supply contribute to sustainable cultivation, for example through certification or credits. Upon request, this must be supported with documentation.

Requirements for Soy

As a supplier, you must ensure that any soy included in your products, or used in feed for animal production, is sustainably cultivated according to one of the models below. This applies both to soy used as ingredients (e.g., soy protein and edamame) and to soy used embedded in feed in the production of animal-based raw materials. Upon request, certificates or other forms of verification must be provided.

Preferred option

When available, the following certifications are to be used as a first choice:

  • RTRS Segregated & Mass Balance
  • ProTerra*
  • Donau Soja*
  • Europe Soya*
  • ISCC plus*
  • EU Organic, KRAV or any other organic certification approved by IFOAM.
  • Verification through Svensk Fågel, Svenska Ägg, IP Sigill, or the German quality standard QS.
  • Swedish animal products produced using Swedish-produced feed already have verified more sustainable soy in the feed. For more information about the feed used in Sweden, visit Foder & Spannmål.

* All available chain of custody models are accepted, including credits, mass balance, and segregated.

If needed

May be used when the recommended certifications are not possible to use:

  • RTRS Book & Claim (Regional Credits)

Is the soy not certified?

  1. Calculate the annual volume of soy in your products. Include both direct soy (e.g., soy protein, soybean meal, and soybean oil) and embedded soy that may have been used in feed for animal-based raw materials. To estimate the amount of embedded soy, use the RTRS calculation tool. One credit equals one tonne of soy.
  2. Purchase RTRS credits. Credits can be purchased directly from RTRS (select Regional Credits) or through the joint credit purchase with the Platform’s members, which offers a simpler process with lower administration and cost. Contact the Platform Secretariat if you would like to know more. Read more about the joint credit purchase here (in Swedish).

Requirements for palm oil

As a supplier, you must ensure that palm oil and palm kernel oil, including all fractions and derivatives, included in your products are sustainably cultivated according to one of the models below. This applies to products in the food, cosmetics, hygiene and cleaning categories, as well as other non-food categories. Upon request, certificates or other forms of verification must be provided. In 2027, the requirement is planned to be expanded to also include embedded palm oil from palm-based fats used in feed for animal production.

Preferred option

When available, the following certifications are to be used as a first choice:

  • RSPO Identity Preserved
  • RSPO Segregated
  • RSPO Mass Balance (non-food)
  • KRAV or any other organic certification approved by IFOAM.
  • Verifiering genom Svanen, Bra miljöval samt COSMOS natura och organic.

If needed

May be used when the recommended certifications are not possible to use:

  • RSPO Book & Claim (Independent Smallholder Credits)
